Bring Home A Memory

Plants propagated by volunteers in the garden from divisions, cuttings, seeds and those which “volunteer” and grow on their own are offered for sale to the public at both the Spring and Fall Open Houses. There are also Plant Sales from time to time on Members Days.

Propagation of the plants at Darts Hill serves several purposes: to expand the inventory, to replace stock plants and inventory because of their rarity, to save plants  from disease or extreme weather, and to provide a surplus that can be sold for fundraising. There is an excellent work yard where most of the work can be carried out. Provided for the volunteers are a good soil mixture for potting, work tables, pots of all sizes, easy access to water, and a large plunge bed where planted pots are buried up to their rims in mulch. Work sessions are typically two hours or less.

Although propagating from cuttings and growing plants from seeds collected in the garden are important aspects of the committee's work they require special skills. There are, however, such a variety of jobs to make this work a success that all members could find a place where their skills could be used. Some tasks are as simple as watering the plunge bed and helping out at Plant Sales.

If you would like to discuss how you could participate effectively volunteering for a couple of hours from time to time please contact Nancy Armstrong at 604-538-7551.
